PITCH YOUR STORY BY MARCH 7, 2021
We are seeking contributors for CreatedHere Magazine Issue 16: queer+.
The queer community is as vibrant and multifaceted as their creative pursuits. Art can help to express sex, gender and sexuality, and the different ways they transform and intersect. Queer art is also about stepping outside the comfort zone that society built and exploring different ways of being. It's about connecting with others who validate our experiences and allow us to feel seen for who we are, not what we're “supposed” to be.
Art can be a tool to educate and facilitate a better understanding of the unique experiences and hardships of marginalized communities. Although we find ourselves in a place of great community and curiosity, of self-expression and growing acceptance, the work is not complete. There’s still progress to be made. We want to contribute to a province where the youth see their diverse voices represented, not just on TV or social media, but right here at home.
Let’s start by documenting and sharing our beautifully queer stories.
We are seeking:
artist profiles from across the LGBTQ2+ identity spectrum: who are you, what do you make and why do you make it?
art and wearable art that expresses your sex, sexuality, gender, or fluidity.
true stories of how art and creativity can contribute to self-acceptance and/or reclaiming your body
lived experiences – the good and the bad – of being a queer artist in NB
examples of art being used to create new cultural norms or spark essential conversations about queer experience
We are open to any and all ideas that creatively fit this theme within the scope of visual art, craft, or design. You can write from personal experience or about another artist, event, exhibition, or organization. Trust your voice and personal interests. You do not need to be an experienced writer and your featured artist does not need to be well-known.
Your initial pitch should be short and sweet. Please read the submission instructions on our website to ensure you send everything we need to consider your work. Through the generous support of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation and the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design, we offer payment for selected articles ($120-$250 depending on word count).
